Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just for large corporations. Today even a small company can automate routine work and make decisions based on data. There's only one question: where to start, so the benefit is real rather than just a buzzword in a presentation?
Start with the process, not the technology
The most common mistake is looking for "where to bolt on some AI". The right direction is the opposite: first find out which processes take the most time or go wrong most often, and only then look at whether they can be automated. AI is a tool for solving a problem, not a goal in itself.
Where the biggest gains are
In practice, these tend to pay off fastest:
- Automating routine tasks – data entry, report preparation, document processing.
- Data-driven decisions – forecasts, demand estimation, anomaly detection, tied to clear dashboards.
- Customer service – answering frequent questions, sorting and routing requests.
From a small step to a system
There's no need to overhaul the whole company at once. Pick one clear process, measure how much time or how many errors it costs today, automate it and compare the result. A successful pilot delivers not only saved time but also the confidence to expand further.
Common mistakes
Three things are worth avoiding: automating a messy process (fix it first), deploying AI without a clear goal, and forgetting people – the team needs to be involved and trained so the solution takes root.
