Data analytics is one of the most in-demand skills on the job market. Yet many people who want to learn it get stuck on the very first question: where do I start? The good news – you can get going without a maths or programming degree, as long as you move step by step.

Where to start

Start not with tools, but with a question: what problem do I want to solve with data? Analytics is a means to find answers, not a goal in itself. Pick a real example – sales, marketing or operations data – and learn by solving a concrete task.

Which skills you need

In practice, a few things matter most:

  • SQL – pulling data from databases. It's the foundation you can't go far without.
  • Python (or R) – cleaning, transforming and deeper analysis of data.
  • Data visualisation – Power BI, Looker or Tableau, so results turn into clear reports and dashboards.
  • Statistics basics – so you understand what the numbers actually mean.

Tools worth starting with

For beginners, free tools are enough: SQL (for example PostgreSQL), Python with the `pandas` library, and Power BI Desktop. You don't need to learn everything at once – it's better to master one tool well than ten superficially.

Practice beats theory

Theory without practice is quickly forgotten. Work with real data, make mistakes and try again. That's exactly why our data analytics and engineering training is built on real projects rather than slides alone – for both individuals and teams.
